Body mass index calculator

Body mass index (or BMI) is the internationally used, statistical measure of the weight of a person scaled according to height. It was invented between somewhere around the middle of the 19th century by the Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetelet, who researched average physical and intellectual features of the population. Thus, the measure is also referred to as the "Quetelet index".

Body mass index is used to indicate if a person is normal, underweight, obese or overweight. However, it's also used to determine fatness in people who are athletic or muscular. BMI is mathematically defined as an individual's body weight divided by the square of their height.

Men are usually satisfied with a BMI ranging from 23 to 25, yet women tend to believe they look their best at values between 20 to 22. A popular believe is that people with BMI between 17 and 22 tend to have a longer life expectancy than average.
